Speedy Paints

This week: beautiful weather, celebrating the end of the semester, celebrating friend's graduations, and relaxation! I've also been getting to ride, run, and hike everyday which is the BEST but my poor muscles are pretty out of shape so its also been the most PAINFUL.

I was also lucky to go painting at a few cafes and the Japanese Friendship gardens this week, but painting with gouache and watercolor is pretty unforgiving so I wasn't too inclined to scan those guys.

Gonna go keep jammin'!

Megar Semester Post

Wowie Wow! The semester is over, my term as graphic designer is almost over, and my summer position as an  assistant instructor for Galileo Camps begins in two weeks. Its been years since I haven't had a job so I'm taking this opportunity to paint, hike, visit family, and paint some more!

Here's some work from the semester! I'm just gonna post my visual development work, but I also have a digital modeling project that turned out pretty cool.

This is some development work for the Norse goddess, Skadi - she's the inspiration for Hans Christian Anderson's the snow queen and spends most of the year hunting in the snowy mountains

This next project was to develop a science fiction novel. I chose Ursula K Le Guinn's The Lathe of Heaven. Its the story of a man who's dreams change the continuum of reality. I highly recommend it, its a short read but very thought provoking with lots of interesting observations about the nature of the universe and finding balance within it. I chose to develop a sequence where the main character retreats to a cabin in the Oregon woods that he has dreamed for himself. A modest place, it sits in a development with 30 other cabins around a lake. My goal for the project was to develop a modern feel within this alternate continuum.

That's all for now! Time to paint, draw, and paint some more!

Hatoful Artwork

Long time no post. Lately I've been really busy creating my own spin-off of the Japanese dating sim, Hatoful Boyfriend

This time its only pigeons wearing masks of humans wearing fake mustaches. I figure that you gotta just follow your bliss. Do what makes you happy and the money doesn't matter.

In addition to that I'm also creating posters for the SJSU animation/illustration club, here are some from this semester and last:

Last semster I also took my first visual development class, I learned a lot. A LOT. The class focused on implementing the fundamentals and really committing to the footwork of the creative process. Here is some work from that:

our first project, to design a kitchen for a lower-class Mexican family in 1960's Fresno
A free-form project where we adapted a Russian fable about a fox in the kennel. I choose to take mine in the direction of a small agricultural community dealing with corporate interests.
and our final projects, a whimsical character with a food cart:

I'm now in my second semester of Visual Development, my last semester before my capstone class and my last year of college. Now more than ever I feel a need to focus on the basics, practice my painting and push myself creatively. Here are some one hour speed paints from the movie Incendiary. My friend and I recently read the book, which we loved so much we immediately watched the film adaptation. Though a good movie, we found the way they handled Chris Cleave's characters a little disappointing. The book was so compelling because the characters and plot were unapologetic. I did find the movie's color and lighting to be stunning, the pallete easily shifting from subdued to saturated.

Thanksgiving Doodles

I went to CTN last weekend, met a lot of cool and inspirational people, and listened to some of them give talks. The golden nugget of inspiration that stuck with me was an interview of Carlos Nine - he pulled out a folio filled with mindless doodles, most of which he had created while on the phone. He described these doodles as representative of his identity as an artist, the dictionary of the language in which he worked.

I'm learning so much this semester, and struggling with my identity as artist. Nine described himself as a worker who creates images. I have to leave to catch a bus now.
